About the Author
Donna Poisl was born and raised in the United States and moved to Canada in 1978. She had to find out how to get her driver license, open bank accounts, get insurance, establish credit and all the other things she knew she needed. Donna was very fortunate because the two systems were similar and the language was the same.

In 1995, she moved back to the United States and had to do all those things again. Everything was different than it was in 1978 when she left, but again, the systems were similar and the language was the same.

During several years as an insurance agent, she helped her clients understand insurance and while selling real estate, showed them how to build or repair their credit so they could qualify for a mortgage. She realized then how useful a beginner's guide to life in the U.S. would be to them. She knows how hard it was for her to find everything and can only imagine how difficult it must be for people from entirely different cultures and different languages.

This book was written to help immigrants with the common, everyday things they have to do and to help them find information, especially since some of the things that are necessary here might not be needed in their countries. Anyone who can read English, but not Spanish, could still use the book.

She hopes this book helps you and makes your life in this country much easier and more enjoyable.

Donna has told her story and shared her experiences in many newspaper and radio interviews. She is a firm believer in helping immigrants succeed in this country. She has spoken about the importance of assimilation, why multiculturalism doesn't work, how important it is to help immigrants learn English and learn the laws and their rights and responsibilities. She has written articles about the immigration system and how it needs reform to help with the backlog of people waiting many years for legal status.
